Setting up VOIP on the N80 Internet Edition

Here’s how I got VOIP working on my Nokia N80 with Internet Edition firmware:

  • Ensure you have your wireless access point defined in your N80
  • Install Gizmo client onto your PC, download from http://www.gizmoproject.com/ to create an account with Gizmo.
  • Use the “Download!” application on your N80 to download Gizmo.
  • After installing, it will ask you for your Gizmo username and password. Enter this and you’re done.
  • To start VOIP calling, select “Internet Tel.” from the N80 menu (Under “Internet”)
    Connecting To VOIP
  • Click your wifi access point and it will connect to Gizmo. If all works you will see a phone and globe icon appear in the corner of your screen.
  • To make a test call call “echo”. To dial it, press any number on the main phone screen, then press the pencil key to switch to “alpha mode” then type “echo” and delete the number from the display. (If anyone knows of a better way to do this, without using the phonebook, let me know).
dialling a VOIP number dialling a VOIP number
  • press “Options” and select “Internet Call”. It will connect to Gizmo test number when you check to see if it’s working OK.

I had a few problems connecting to Gizmo. I kept getting “Unable to connect to the connection network” error after about 1 minute of trying to connect.. After looking through the Gizmo forums which, unhelpfully said it was a username/password problem. I figured it might be my router.

I checked the ports it was using: port 5060 (UDP) so I opened this up on my router and it worked! I even tried calling my mate who has an N80IE and we had a call over VOIP. There was the odd bit of lag during the call which I think was down to the network, but other than that - it was the same as calling over GSM.

I can’t seem to get away from the “Unable to connect to the connection network” error. I’ve port forwarded port 5060 UDP through my routers… Any ideas? I can connect with the PC client…

When I was setting up my VoIP I opened up the following ports:

5060 to 5070 UDP (VoIP)

10000 to 20000 UDP (VOICE)

also to increase security I directed them to my VoIP hardware

I use router USR9106 on my office and USR9108 on my home. With 9106 I have no problem to connect with N80. With 9108 I get the message “Unable to connect to the connection network” even if i have all ports open to N80. No problem with PC connection through Ethernet cable.
Any suggestions?

Try Irish Biker’s suggestion of opening:

5060 to 5070 UDP (VoIP)

10000 to 20000 UDP (VOICE)

Depending on your router, you may have to set the N80 up to a static IP on your home WiFi connection, then set the router to direct traffic to the phone’s IP on port 5060.

Just solved my problem, I found that because my router supports SIP, it was pinching all the incoming SIP connections even though I’d port forwarded. My router is a Speedtouch 780 and I did the following to disable SIP support:

Open a Command Prompt window, e.g:
Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> Command Prompt

At the prompt, type ‘telnet’ followed by the ip address of the SpeedTouch (default is 192.168.1.254).

and then type:

:connection unbind application=SIP port=5060

and then type:

:saveall

I don’t know how to configure my router. I have a linksys WRTP54G. Can anyone walk me through the process of setting up the router so that I can use VOIP on my Nokia N80ie? Also, it seems that using gizmo confines people to their home router. I would hope that we as users can get on the road and use it out of the country or in areas like Vermont. Where I currently reside now, I lack great reception and I border Canada. I would like to use it in areas where there is a lack of service reception but, not wifi. Has anyone extended the gizmo capabilities outside of their configured network?

I’ve been using Fring for past few months on my N80 and I am pretty happy with the voice quality. Works great with both WIFI and GPRS.

fring 3.0 - Now with SIP!

fring now supports SIP (version 3.0)!

You can now use your SIP account even from non-SIP enabled phones.
Choose whichever SIP provider you have and in just few clicks, start using this account to make calls to landlines, GSM phones, or to other SIP providers. What’s more, fring allows you to easily switch between them, without having to reconfigure your handset through a nightmarish process. Whether it is the GizmoProject, FWD, or any other SIP provider, fring is open to any SIP solution out there (as far as we know…. :-) )

I just installed Fring on my N80ie. It works great, but my call quality got worse for all calls (GSM and VOIP). Did this happen to anyone else? What did you do to fix it?
