Setting up VOIP on the N80 Internet Edition

Here’s how I got VOIP working on my Nokia N80 with Internet Edition firmware:

  • Ensure you have your wireless access point defined in your N80
  • Install Gizmo client onto your PC, download from http://www.gizmoproject.com/ to create an account with Gizmo.
  • Use the “Download!” application on your N80 to download Gizmo.
  • After installing, it will ask you for your Gizmo username and password. Enter this and you’re done.
  • To start VOIP calling, select “Internet Tel.” from the N80 menu (Under “Internet”)
    Connecting To VOIP
  • Click your wifi access point and it will connect to Gizmo. If all works you will see a phone and globe icon appear in the corner of your screen.
  • To make a test call call “echo”. To dial it, press any number on the main phone screen, then press the pencil key to switch to “alpha mode” then type “echo” and delete the number from the display. (If anyone knows of a better way to do this, without using the phonebook, let me know).
dialling a VOIP number dialling a VOIP number
  • press “Options” and select “Internet Call”. It will connect to Gizmo test number when you check to see if it’s working OK.

I had a few problems connecting to Gizmo. I kept getting “Unable to connect to the connection network” error after about 1 minute of trying to connect.. After looking through the Gizmo forums which, unhelpfully said it was a username/password problem. I figured it might be my router.

I checked the ports it was using: port 5060 (UDP) so I opened this up on my router and it worked! I even tried calling my mate who has an N80IE and we had a call over VOIP. There was the odd bit of lag during the call which I think was down to the network, but other than that - it was the same as calling over GSM.

Upgraded mine to the EURO 1 Black Version (Product Code: 0539363)

Worked great. Here’s some screenshots. VOIP is now a part of the OS. I’m going to update a friend’s phone with the firmware later and test out the VOIP. There’s a new “Download!” application which has new free applications like Zip Mananger, WLAN Wizard which appears on the active standby, and Gizmo VOIP.
