Using Nokia Software Updater

After discovering the software doesn’t have the latest v4 firmware for the N80, I had a go at upgrading my old 6630 to the new v6 firmware. The software is very easy to use, took about 12-15 minutues to update and can sit alongside phoenix and PC Suite..
Step 1:
The software searches for updates and lets you know if there are any - you tick the box to say you agree this could potentially kill your phone.

Step 2:
The software insists you connect your phone to a charger (best be safe than sorry, I guess)

Step 3:
The software downloads the software. This took about 6/7 minutes on a 1MB connection.

Step 4:
The software reboots the phone and starts the update. Again this took about 6-7 mins

Step 5:
Done! The phone restarts.

N80 Phone Codes

A Quick Reference For the various codes you can enter on the N80:

*#06# - Displays the phone’s IMEI (Serial) Number
*#0000# - Displays the phone’s current firmware version
*#7370# - Reset the phone to factory settings (you will lose information!)
*#62209526# - Displays your phone’s WLAN MAC Address
*#2820# - Displays your phone’s bluetooth MAC Address

Nokia Release Official Flashing Program

Nokia have finally released their own software called Nokia Software Update , which will allow users to update their phone’s firmware at home. This is a lot easier than using Phoenix - and I’d imagine a bit safer to use. I’ve not had a chance to use it yet as it says my phone’s software is up-to-date. I’ll be updating my mate’s N80 later so I’ll post the results. It supports oldee phones too (N70, 6680, 6630) so I’ll try with my old 6630 as well.

One down-side I can see to this method is that it will insist on using operator-specific firmware..

How to update your N80 to v4.0623.0.41

1. Download the following files:
   • Diego 3.07 SP2 (alternative) (alternative 2)
   • Phoenix 2006 (Part 1)
   • Phoenix 2006 (Part 2)
   • Phoenix 2004 Dongle Fix
   • Phoenix 2006 Fix (alternate package)
   • v4.0623.0.41 Firmware (alternative)
2. Uninstall any current Nokia software from your PC (e.g. PC Suite)
3. Extract The Diego ZIP file, and install Diego.
4. After installing Diego, run the crack file that you extracted from the ZIP.
5. Run the Phoenix 2006 install.
6. At the point where it complains about the dongle/DES key, run the 2004 Dongle Fix, click “Extract” and when it asks about over-writing, quickly switch to the Phoenix setup and click Retry, then hit “Yes To All” in the 2004 Dongle fix. If you do it successfully, setup will continue.
7. Reboot when asked to.
8. Ignore any error messages you may get after reboot (press OK/Continue).
9. Run the 2006 Fix (Extract and overwrite any files it asks about).
10. Run and complete the installation for the firmware.
11. Start the Phoenix program.
12. You may need to set up a new profile, call this whatever you want.
13. From the File menu, click “Manage Connections”.
14. Click Add
15. Select USB and OK all the dialog boxes.
16. Make sure your phone is on and fully charged. Most people have to leave the SIM card in for flashing to work.
17. Connect your N80 up using the USB cable, then select “Scan Product” from the File menu.
18. You should see your phone’s details in the bottom of the window (including current software version).
19. If this information is correct, select “SW Update” from the Flashing menu.
20. Phoenix will scan the phone, this might take a minute. Once done you can either select the flash files manually (the .fspx file as the Image File and a .v## for the PPM file) or you can use the Code drop-down at the top and select your phone type. I chose Euro 2 Smooth Stainless Steel for my UK Orange phone. This will select an appropraite fspx, v## and also an APE file (this file adds extra programs to the phone such as Settings Wizard, Anti-Virus (Trial), PDF reader and Wireless Keyboard). Remove this file if you don’t want these extra applications. Below are the settings I used:
    
21. Once ready, click “Start”. Again I got a warning about the prommer version, I clicked OK and it carried on as normal.
22. After approx 5 minutes the flashing will complete.

*NB: You’re obviously doing this at your own risk! This is the method I’ve used and I’ve flashed my phone 4 times now without a problem. If you’re unsure, take it to your nearest Nokia Service Centre.

New Firmware!

The latest firmware for the N80 was released yesterday - v4.0623.0.41 - No news on what fixes it includes except the issue with bluetooth.. A quick check on nokia.dogtoe.com and there’ nothing posted there yet..

N80 Hangs when sending SMS Text Messages

My N80 has been starting to get slower and slower when sending a text. And with 1750 free ones to ‘use up’ each month. Waiting over 30 seconds to send one can seem like a lifetime. I thought it may be down to some “suspicious” software on my phone, but I noticed my friend’s N80 was doing the same thing (if not worse).

So I tried resetting the phone settings (type *#7370# from the main screen - have a backup first!) and formatting the phone. It did the trick! It now sends and pauses for about a second instead of 30.

To format your phone, first BACK UP EVERYTHING. As this will wipe the phone data (not your memory card). You will lose calendar details, contacts, settings and anything stored on the phone. I use the PC Suite to back up contacts and calendar items to Outlook, rather than using the phone’s built in backup tool as I find this seems to back up any problems as well.

1. Turn off your phone
2. Press and hold the GREEN (send) key, the * key and the 3 key and then turn the phone on keeping green, * and 3 held down.
3. After about 45 seconds - 1 minute you will be prompted for your time zone and to enter the date and time (you can let go now!).
4. The phone will start up normally and should hopefully be a bit quicker.
5. Put all your settings back on!

Sorry for stating the obvious, but I didn’t spot this one until the other day..

If you need to lock your keypad after the “Lock Keypad?” prompt has gone, just press the power button and select “Lock Keypad”. Saves sliding it open and closing it again.
