Upgrading the firmware of your N80

OK, here’s the steps I took:

  1. Uninstall Nokia PC Suite (if Installed)
  2. If installed, remove the Nokia connectivity driver and any other Nokia connection software using Control Panel
  3. Download Diego (from: http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/diego/55667793_Diego_3_06.msi)
  4. Install Diego, and reboot your PC, when prompted
  5. Download Phoenix 2004 (from: http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/phoenix/phoenix_service_sw_2004_39_7_70.exe)
  6. Download the crack (from: http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/phoenix/phoenix_service_sw_2004_39_7_70_crack.exe)
  7. Open the crack file, but don’t click the Install button yet!
  8. Run the setup for Phoenix. When it bugs you about the dongle, press Retry and quickly hit the Install button on the crack window, and overwrite all files.
  9. Reboot your PC when asked to.
  10. Download the Nokia Cable Driver (from: http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/driver/Nokia_Conn_Cable_Driver_159_ita.msi)
  11. Install the driver (just keep pressing Avanti to install)
  12. Download Phoenix 2006 (from: http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/phoenix/phoenix_service_sw_2006_12_5_136.exe)
  13. Run Phoenix 2004 (already installed)
  14. Hide this window (keep it open!), and now open the 2006 setup file.
  15. Follow the setup through, but at the end, select I will restart later.
  16. Close the Phoenix 2004 version you left open in step 14.
  17. Re-open Phoenix. If you go to Help > About you will see it’s version 2006. If not STOP!
  18. Download your firmware:
    http://nokia.dogtoe.com/files/firmware/n80/
  19. You will need a .fpsx file and a .v## file. Most English users can use 01 or 08, apparently Orange UK use 02 - this is the one I used. Please check in the forums for the correct version (often you can tell by typing *#0000# into your phone and see what number follows the “31″, mine read 31.02 so I used 02..
  20. Turn off the phone, remove the SIM and the memory card.
  21. Turn the phone back on - it will start up in Offline mode.
  22. Connect the USB cable to your PC and phone. When the phone asks, select “PC Suite” from the connection type list.
  23. Windows will start to install drivers (a popup balloon and icon will show in the bottom right corner). Wait for it to finish this process (may take a few minutes). When done the new hardware icon will disappear.
  24. In your Phoenix window click File > Manage Connections. If USB isn’t listed, click Add. Tick just the USB box from the list, and click Next. Once USB appears in your list. Close the connections list box. (picture)
  25. Go to the File menu, and select Scan Product. This will search the USB ports for your phone. If it finds it, it will show the details in the status bar of Phoenix (picture). Make sure this looks like something sensible! It should show similar information to what you see when you type *#0000# into your phone.
  26. Now go to the Flashing menu, and select SW Update.
  27. Wait a few moments for Phoenix to gather some information from the phone. Once it’s done you’ll see some information whizz past in the box at the bottom.
  28. Now you need to select your FPSX file for the Image File location, and you V## file for the PPM file (picture).
  29. Take a deep breath, and press the Start button. At this point I received a warning regarding Phoenix not being able to determine my prommer version, I ignored it and it worked - it may work for you.
  30. Watch the progress bar and messages box at the bottom of the screen for details of the flashing process. It can take about 5 minutes to complete, and your phone will restart 2/3 times during the flashing.
  31. Once completed you can turn your phone off, insert your SIM card and memory card and fire up the new software.
  32. Type *#0000# to check your version.

This is the method I used to upgrade my Orange UK N80 version 3.0614.0.3 to 3.0617.0.6. These instructions are no guarantee of success and your results may vary. If you are unsure, take your phone to a Nokia Service Centre and ask them to perform the upgrade. I accept NO responsibility for any loss, damage, or any other unfortunate event as a result of following these steps. You do so at your own risk.

Hi, I flashed my orange nokia n80 via your helpful instructions. All seems well.

However I am bit worried about these points:

bookmarks, phone book, playlists and photoalbums all remained? even after reseting to factory defaults. Did yours?

The phone book behaved odd, not synching so i deleted all entires and reimported from outlook, now working fine.

I would really like to know if yours left these personilations in place after the flash, I would have though flashing would delete all.

Thanks.

I lost my bookmarks, and my Phone lock code reset to 12345. But phonebook and all other settings remained. I thought they would have all been wiped, too..

Have you tried clicking “Install” in the patch program and leaving the “Confirm file replace” window open whilst you start to install Phoenix. Then at the point when it whinges about the dongle press “yes to all” in the patch and then press retry straight away.

I found it helped to move the windows so the buttons were near to eachother..

no joy..

whats weird is that even if it tell it cancel i still get loads of stuff in the add/remove, such as DK2 drivers, FLS-4 Driver, Nokia DKU-5 & Nokia Connectivity cable driver…

removing all these and diego from add/remove, and will delete anything nokia in program files, and try again.. *sigh*…

must be doing something wrong, as cant find anyone reporting this problem…

my windows is on f:\ but doubt its that, i tell the patch where my system32 is anyways…

i had the same problem tonight - I found it works best to press “Retry” on the Phoenix install then quickly press the “Replace All” button on the patch.

Done the above until i get to the firmware flashing bit, when asked to removed sim card and memory card i do so, then as asked i connect usb cable to phone and computer, my phone then states data transfer cannot happen without a memory card installed, according to the above instructions i should be selecting pc suite from the options presented on the phone. Any ideas?

You might’ve selected “Data Transfer” by mistake when the phone asks what to do when you plug the cable in.

You need to pick PC Suite. It only needs the memory card for Data Transfer mode as it uses the memory card like a USB pen.

@Mark:
Try a different PC or try uninstalling and re-installing all of the software if you get problems.

@Newbie Flasher:
I don’t know of any way of backing up the orang firmware. If you’re worried about your guarantee I’d take it to your nearest Nokia Service Centre. They’ll update it with the latest Orange software for you.

My Nokia N80 was synchronising well with my PC via Nokia PC suite using a USB cable. All of a sudden this week, when I connect my phone to the PC, it no longer is recognised by the PC and I no longer can sync.
I’ve tried reinstalling PC suite on my PC but this has not made any difference.
Anyone experienced the same problem? Any solutions? Thanks.

I have a Black N80 on 02. I was having big problems using a 2GB Sandisk card I had bought for my N80. I had tried several other fixes that had been posted on other sites with no results.

I just took the plunge, followed this guide and updated my firmware from V3.0614.03 to V4.0623.0.41

Works a treat, no more corrupt memory messages!!

Thanks alot for this guide.

Hi -

Went through and sucsessfully loaded verion 623 for APAC onto my phone (Telstra - Australia). Came up with two error messages:

phone version “different from the one scanned from the phone” and

something about the prommer version

Did not delete anything, and kept most of the apps (so still have operator logos etc).

Instructions worked perfectly! Thanks.

Anyone knows what I might be doing wrong?
